ASSISTANCE ON HAND FOR FLOOD AFFECTED IN BALONNE

The floods waters across the region may have gone down but as many people know the damage bills are still going up.

As the region continues to clean up after the flooding the Rural Financial Counselling Service – Central Southern Region is encouraging primary producers and small businesses to take the advantage of assistance available to help cover the costs of recovery.

The Rural Financial Counselling Service – Central Southern Region has offices in St George and Goondiwindi where local Rural Financial Counsellors (RFC) can provide free and impartial advice on the assistance and are able to can refer client to professional and government organisations if needed.

St George RFC Derk Abberfield said, “While the flood may not be the headlines anymore, the affect it has had on the region may only now be realised. Some producers may be just getting around their properties finding damage or small businesses are now adding up the invoices for repairs.”

“With different government agencies and organisations offering a variety of assistance it can be confusing knowing what assistance is out there and what may apply to their situation. If they are unsure of what to do next their local RFC is here to help point them in the right direction.”

“So far we’ve been able to talk people through the assistance that is available and provided them with the forms to help get them started,” Derk said.

While the word ‘counsellor’ brings to mind images of social and emotional counselling Goondiwindi based RFC Debbie Cowley said financial counselling is a completely different thing.

“The message I’d like to get out there is that our service is confidential and free to farmers and rural businesses who want to better prepare for the future, which right now includes helping people move forward after this natural disaster.”

“RFCs have the information and networks to help with understanding and accessing flood relief that is available to eligible properties and small businesses affected directly by flooding.”

“I would encourage operators to approach us; to be as well informed as can be about accessing assistance as well as before making financial decisions,” Debbie said.
